Hutton's ideas were not widely accepted at first, but they gradually gained support over time. In the 19th century, the English geologist Charles Darwin provided further evidence for the great age of the Earth. The Puzzle of Plate Tectonics

Plate tectonics is the theory that the Earth's lithosphere (the rigid outermost layer of the Earth) is divided into a series of tectonic plates that move around the Earth's surface. Plate tectonics is responsible for a wide range of geological phenomena, including earthquakes, volcanoes, and mountain building.
