Diana Nyad was born in New York City on August 29, 1949. She began swimming at the age of 12 and quickly developed a passion for the sport. In 2011, Nyad made her second attempt to swim from Cuba to Florida. This time, she was better prepared and had a team of experienced support crew. But Nyad refused to give up, and she eventually reached the Florida coast after 53 hours of swimming.
